Public Law/Government Relations

The professionals of Benesch’s Public Law Practice Group represent diverse clients before local and state executive and legislative branches of government. Benesch Public Law professionals actively lobby state and local government on important issues of public policy. The group counsels clients on matters of contracting and procurement. Benesch also takes an active role in directing statewide ballot issue campaigns and political action committee management. The firm often litigates cases of public concern before state and federal courts and local and state administrative bodies.

Members of the Public Law Practice Group study and evaluate proposed legislation to determine possible effects of interest to clients or specific legislation and confer with legislators and key officials to emphasize weaknesses or merits of specific legislation to influence passage, defeat, or amendment of legislation or introduction of legislation more favorable to our clients’ interests. Should the need arise, we coordinate meetings between clients and members of the General Assembly or state agencies to discuss legislative or administrative issues and proposals and to allow officials to respond to concerns. Other activities of the group include direct contact with administrative officials, testifying at public hearings and consulting on all matters relating to legislative or administrative needs of clients.

Having served as legal and legislative counsel for various professional and trade associations, Benesch offers full service representation on administrative strategy, funding and constitutional issues. Attorneys in the Public Law Practice Group have been engaged by various entities, including the leadership of the Ohio General Assembly to represent them on such issues as reapportionment and judicial redistricting. We have been involved in the intricate details of developing and implementing issues of statewide importance, earning the firm its reputation as a leader in issues of statewide concern.
