With more than ten years of experience in internal auditing, risk management and compliance, Michelle advises clients on resolving federal tax controversies. She brings extensive experience in all facets of tax law, guiding clients through audits, administrative appeals and litigation, informed by her deep understanding of IRS procedures and enforcement priorities.
Prior to joining Benesch, Michelle served as an attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, where she represented the IRS in trials before the U.S. Tax Court. Her litigation experience includes matters involving the substantiation of business expenses and innocent spouse relief, resulting in favorable judgments for the government. Earlier in her career, she was an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, representing taxpayers in disputes with the IRS.
Having worked on both sides of federal tax controversies, Michelle understands how tax disputes are evaluated and resolved, and helps clients approach them strategically from the outset.
