Partner Jonathan Todd Quoted in National Law Journal on DOT Deregulation and Trucking Enforcement
June 3, 2025
Jonathan Todd, Vice Chair of Benesch’s Transportation & Logistics Practice Group, was recently quoted in the National Law Journal article “DOT Combines Deregulation, Crackdown on Truckers’ English Skills, More Highway Stops, Lawyers Say.”
The article discusses the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) approach to deregulation and enforcement under the Trump administration. While Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has announced broad deregulation, the administration is also increasing enforcement of English language requirements for truck drivers and encouraging traffic enforcement on state highways.
Jonathan commented on the industry’s reaction: “I think many people in the transportation and logistics industry were very pleased at the outset of this administration with the idea that enforcement may be more driven by common sense than by strict technical compliance. And I think that sentiment is still felt by many in the transportation and logistics community. But there are some pockets of increased enforcement.”
This reflects a mixed response from the industry—while some appreciate the common-sense approach, others are noticing areas of heightened enforcement.
