Benesch Represents Austin American-Statesman in Landmark Labor Contract with Austin NewsGuild

December 9, 2024

Benesch is proud to announce that Steven Moss, a partner in the Firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group, represented the Austin American-Statesman in negotiations with the Austin NewsGuild to reach agreement on a first labor contract between the Statesman and its front-line journalists. This agreement marks a significant milestone as the parties reached a tentative agreement on a first contract after three and a half years at the bargaining table, culminating in a 21-hour marathon bargaining session before a federal mediator in Austin, Texas. Statesman reporters, photographers, columnists, producers and planners ratified the contract on Thursday, November 21.

The Austin American-Statesman, a major daily newspaper for Austin, Texas, is part of Gannett, the publisher of USA TODAY and more than 200 local news sites nationwide. Founded in 1871, the Statesman offers comprehensive coverage of local, national and international news, with a strong focus on Central Texas.

Partner Steven Moss led the Benesch team, which included the following attorneys who assisted with Benesch’s successful defense and resolution of numerous unfair labor practice charges filed by the Austin NewsGuild with the National Labor Relations Board over the course of three and a half years of bargaining: Adam Primm, Joe Blalock, Thomas Jackson and Hannah Kraus.
