Erik Connolly Quoted on Court Ruling in Smartmatic Lawsuit
January 14, 2025
A New York appeals court has upheld a ruling denying Fox Corp.’s request to dismiss a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit brought by voting systems company Smartmatic. The lawsuit claims that Fox News maliciously aired false information about Smartmatic’s software following the 2020 election, allegations the network has defended as newsworthy.
Smartmatic has also taken steps to hold Fox’s board members accountable, filing motions with the Supreme Court of New York to obtain documents from Anne Dias, Charles Carey, Roland Hernandez, and Jacques Nasser.
“Accountability and responsibility do not stop with Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch,” said Erik Connolly, Smartmatic’s attorney, in a statement to The Washington Post. “Smartmatic plans to pursue Fox’s board members as well to determine why they allowed the company’s most valuable asset, Fox News, to spread disinformation about the 2020 election.”
