Benesch attorneys Shaneeda Jaffer and Carlo Lipson were mentioned in Law360 for representing Wilton Rancheria in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California seeking to overturn an arbitrator’s finding that a 2017 labor agreement, rather than the tribe’s 2019 Tribal Labor Relations Ordinance, governs unionization at the tribe’s Sky River Casino.
The tribe argues that arbitrator Anthony Miller exceeded his authority by giving precedence to the memorandum of agreement over sovereign tribal law, and that his award requiring the casino to recognize UNITE HERE as the workers’ bargaining representative should be vacated or corrected.
