Overview
Michael Chu is a partner in Benesch’s Intellectual Property Practice Group with more than 34 years of experience representing clients in high-stakes patent and intellectual property disputes. In addition to his litigation practice, he counsels domestic and international clients on litigation risk, post-grant proceedings, patent prosecution, intellectual property portfolio strategy, licensing, corporate transactions and cross-border intellectual property matters.
A registered patent attorney, Michael has extensive experience leading complex patent cases in federal courts across the country and before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). His practice includes utility patent, design patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret disputes, as well as inter partes review (IPR) and other post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Drawing on decades of litigation and prosecution experience, he helps clients develop and protect intellectual property assets while navigating business-critical disputes and enforcement matters.
With a background in mechanical engineering, Michael works closely with innovators, engineers, designers and business leaders to protect and maximize the value of their intellectual property. He has represented clients across a broad range of industries, spanning consumer products, household appliances, food production, medical devices, immunotherapies, chemical processing, manufacturing, automotive technologies, software and electronics. His technical background and practical understanding of product development allow him to provide strategic guidance from the earliest stages of innovation through enforcement and litigation.
Michael also maintains a significant international practice, advising clients on intellectual property, licensing, import-export, outsourcing and regulatory matters throughout Asia, including Korea, China, Japan and Southeast Asia, as well as Europe. He regularly assists companies with global portfolio management, intellectual property risk assessment and cross-border enforcement strategies.
Clients value Michael’s ability to combine deep technical knowledge with practical business judgment. Having spent more than two decades at a premier intellectual property litigation boutique before joining an Am Law 100 platform, he brings a distinctive perspective to complex intellectual property matters, combining sophisticated litigation and patent prosecution experience with a strategic, business-focused approach.
